This site does not probe an onion, so nothing here is a claim that a given address opens for you right now.
A stale nexus market bookmark is a saved string that no longer opens. The bookmark is not broken. The string is out of sync with what the market is publishing now.
What it is
A bookmark in tor browser is a stored line, the same as any other saved string. It has no update loop. It does not check itself against a directory. It sits in the file until the reader either opens it, edits it or deletes it. Stale means the string in the file was correct on the day it was saved and has not caught up since.
The state this card is about is the ordinary one. The reader clicked the bookmark. Nothing opened. The reader is deciding what to do with the bookmark.
Lifeline
- Bookmark opened its onion
- Bookmark opens nothing
- Bookmark updated, or removed
Why a bookmark ages
- The address it stores was rotated off the panel and the bookmark did not learn.
- The onion it stores is one that was published elsewhere and never on this site.
- The bookmark was copied from a printout or a chat that had a typo already.
- The bookmark was pinned to a lookalike, and the lookalike is now offline.
How to replace the bookmark
- Open the bookmark editor
- The stored string is visible. Read it. Do not delete it before the read.
- Compare it against the panel above
- If the stored string matches a line on the panel, the string is current and the site itself was quiet when the click happened. Try again in a moment.
- If the stored string does not match
- Copy a line off the panel above. Paste it over the stored string in the bookmark. Save.
- Rename the bookmark to match
- A bookmark labelled with the top slot is one that a reader expects to open the top slot. A rename after the paste keeps the label honest.
A small next check
- Open the bookmarks list.
- Find the entry for nexus market.
- Compare the stored string against the three lines on the panel above.
- If none of the three match, treat the stored string as unknown and replace it with a line from the panel.
- If one line matches, no replacement is needed.
What the browser does when a bookmark opens nothing
A click on a bookmark to a v3 onion tells tor browser to build a circuit to the service the string points at. If the service is not there, the browser reports a timeout after it has failed to find it. If the string is malformed, the browser reports that the address is not a valid onion. The two error shapes are the same as the ones on the after a typo card, because the browser does not know whether the address came from a bookmark or from the address bar.
The bookmark is not to blame for either message. It is the surface, not the string. Replacing the surface is a matter of overwriting the string it stores.
How to keep a bookmark honest over time
- Label with the vanity head
- A bookmark labelled with the first characters of the string is one a reader can cross against the panel above with a quick glance, without opening the properties dialog.
- One bookmark per slot
- A separate bookmark for the top, middle and bottom lines ages better than one bookmark for the market. When a slot rotates, only one bookmark has to change.
- A note in the description field
- A short qualitative note like "top slot" in the bookmark description keeps the intent visible.
- A periodic reread
- The panel above is the current file. A quick cross of the bookmarks against the panel now and then catches a rotation early.
What not to do with a stale bookmark
- Do not paste any secret onto the page a stale bookmark opens, if it opens anything at all.
- Do not keep the stale bookmark alongside the new one under the same label. Rename the stale one or overwrite it.
- Do not treat a stale bookmark as proof the market has moved. A slow circuit and a fresh reboot can also produce nothing on click.
- Do not delete the bookmark before reading the stored string. The stored string is data. It may be what the reader needs to compare against a note somewhere else.
Engagement
What this card does not say
- It does not say the bookmark is fake. Most stale bookmarks are just old.
- It does not say when the bookmark went stale.
- It does not name any bookmark manager or browser extension.
- It does not recommend automatic update tools for onion bookmarks.
